BookMart

BookMart - The Major Source of our Funds

BookMart is our major source of funds. From sales of quality used books that are donated by Charles Sturt City Council Library and members of the public, we apply those funds to different projects that significantly impact upon the lives of others.

How BookMart Works

The books for our BookMart are donated by the City of Charles Sturt Libraries. These books are their culled unwanted books. The public also donate books, DVDs and CDs.

There is a rotating 3-week roster where members and volunteers are rostered. Their main duties are sorting, pricing books and assisting the public.

We have the use of a shed which allows us to sort many of our books.

Many of the children’s and teen’s books are given to Lestho, a country in Africa where they are taken to help stock the school libraries.

Funds Raised

All funds go to the Club Project Account. We have recently donated funds to many community projects, such as the Epilesy Foundation, Girl Guides, the Smith Family, Tutti, Downs Syndrome, Back Packs 4 SA Kids, Novita  Grandparents for Grandchildren and a container with medical supplies which was sent to Tanna Island, Vanuatu.

There has been the ongoing key Partnership with the City of Charles Sturt since 2005 that has made it possible for our BookMart to raise funds for the numerous  community  groups  over that sustained time.  Rotary Kidman Park are very grateful to City of Charles Sturt for their enduring support.

Rotary Kidman Park’s BookMart History

Rotary Kidman Park has successfully run a BookMart for many years in the corner of the West Lakes Library. It began in May 2005.

We have been very fortunate to have volunteers that have willingly given of their time and worked hard over many years to make this possible under the leadership of Margaret Sargent and Stuart Ghent. The books were stored in an old sea container.

There were rumours that were confirmed by the City of Charles Sturt Council, that the West Lakes Library would be demolished and a new Library would be built in 2021.

Since we were told in advance that we would not be able to continue to have our BookMart in the new premises Jenny Harris began discussions with Jacqui Stretton from the council, looking into other possibilities.  Joined by other fellow Rotarians, Warren Hobbs, Rob Chambers, Ron Harris we began discussions with the Council members to see if we could hire a suitable building. We were shown three possibilities and we chose the hall at Gawler Street, Woodville West, which was only used twice a week by the Girl Guides. Through negotiations, we found a way that we could share the space by having some of bookshelves on wheels.

We were incredibly grateful that Donations in Kind were able to give us the bookshelves we needed and through the hard work of our members we were able to open our new BookMart at Woodville West in November 2019.
