Vanuatu is one of the Pacific Ocean’s remote island communities located W of Fiji and N of New Caledonia. The Tanna Island Hospital lies about 100km S of the capital Port Vila and was in urgent need of medical equipment.
In November 2021 The Rotary Club of Kidman Park in co-operation with Rotary Donations in Kind purchased a container and members of the club spent a few weekends filling it with a range of medical supplies sourced by the Rotary Donations In Kind organisation that included electronic equipment, furniture, wheelchairs, beds, and the like. The container was freighted to Port Vila and then transported to Tanna Island where it was eagerly unloaded by the locals.
Bridging Health in Vanuatu is Rotary Australia World Community Service Project (RAWCS), “Bridging Health in Vanuatu” (project # 107-2019-20) is registered through Rotary Australia Overseas Aid Fund (RAOAF). Tanna Island Hospital’s Bridging Health Annual Report said:
“The dramatic increase in costs of shipping, had us wondering how we were going to fulfill our commitment to Lenakel Hospital to source a shipping container full of needed medical equipment and supplies. Then I received a very welcomed call from Tom Bunnik from Rotary Club of Kidman Park making enquiries about projects that Bridging Health that may require assistance. Their Rotary Club was looking into several options, and I was thrilled to hear they had made the decision to ship a shipping container full of medical, health and hospital supplies to Tanna. This generosity really touched the heart of the Director of the Lenakel Hospital and put a smile on a lot of Lenakel Staff members! I join Enneth Ilaisa and the staff of Lenakel Hospital in thanking Rotary Club of Kidman Park for supporting the health of the people of Tanna in this way. The incredible amount of health and medical donations, supplies, equipment and training materials that passed through Bridging Health in 2021 was staggering.”
